Summer S.E.A.S.
SEAS Summer Program
The SEAS Marine Science Summer Program, hosted by The Florida Aquarium, will focus on the diversity and adaptations of aquatic life in Florida’s coastal environments. This year the central theme for Summer SEAS “Ecosystems”. Daily field trips, classroom and lab activities will enhance your understanding of the biological and physical characteristics of coastal habitats. SEAS is seeking motivated teachers interested in enhancing their knowledge about Florida’s aquatic environments and incorporating the SEAS experience into their classroom curriculum. This is an intensive, staying on-site, 5-day experience.
Eligibility and Application
Science instructors teaching grades 6-12, are eligible. There are no previous in-service or workshop requirements, but teachers that have attended a SEAS one-day workshop will be considered favorably.
Preparation and Requirements
Bring your enthusiasm for learning about Florida’s aquatic environments! Be prepared for strenuous daily outdoor activities including walking, light swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and boating. Participants must be available to reside in a dorm room (double-occupancy) and attend all activities during the SEAS Summer Program. There will be extensive time spent outside conducting a variety of activities. Participants will keep a journal of trips, presentations, and activities.
The University of South Florida St. Petersburg will be home-base for the week. Transportation to and from USFSP is the responsibility of the participant. Transportation, meals, and housing will be covered by The Florida Aquarium during the week-long workshop. Participants successfully completing the SEAS program receive a $200 stipend, and can earn up to 40 in-service points.
When: Sunday June 22– Thursday, June 26, 2025
Where: Examples of field sites include: Crystal Springs, the Hillsborough River, Egmont Key, and the Florida Aquarium. Habitats we will be exploring include seagrass beds, mangrove forests, rivers, and spring systems. Evenings will be spent conducting classroom activities that relate to the field components each day.
